Artist Profile: Chen, Weiming
Personal Background
Born in Hangzhou of China, Weiming Chen, is a well-known Sculptor and Publisher. He is a permanent Resident of the United States and also a citizen of New Zealand.
Weiming Chen graduated from the Central Arts and Crafts College in Beijing with a major in Special Arts and Crafts & Decorated Sculpture. While he was working at City Sculptures Studio in Hangzhou City, he designed and made a lot of large-scale city sculptures, including Sprinkler Statues in Wulin Square, Statues of Qingtai Cloverleaf Junction, and Relief in front of Chinese-Japan Amity Hotel. Dozens of the large-scale city sculptures made by Chen were exhibited in Beijing, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.

July 2009 The Path to Tibet’s Freedom was exhibited in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taiwan and was moved to Dharamsara, India and permanently placed there.
June 2009 completed a large-scale relief of Tiananmen Massacre, which is 6.4 meters in width, 3.2 meters in height.
2008-2009 created Statue Path to Tibet’s Freedom (imitated bronze material) and was unveiled in New York on March 10, 2009.
October 2009 created a 6.4-meter-high Statue of Democracy, which is in imitated bronze material and exhibited in the front of U.S Capitol in Washington D.C.
2008 created Statue of U.S. President Barrack Obama for California Democracy Party (Imitated copper material), which was exhibited in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
2005 created an 8-meter-high sculpture (stainless steel material) for Ankang Company in Manukau, New Zealand.
2003 created the bronze prize trophy for a Beauty Contest in New Zealand.
2002 invited by International Han-Tibet Association, and went to Dharamsala, India to sculpt a bronze statue for Dalai Lama.
2001 during the 911 catastrophe, designed a lot of artistic and patriotic creations in Union Square , New York.
2001 was granted permanent residency of the United States as a person with extraordinary abilities.
1999 was recorded in The Dictionary of Contemporary Celebrities of world-wide Chinese published by China Literature United.
1998 moved to New Zealand.
1996 created a 2.8-meter-high Statue of Confucius for New Zealand Chinese School.
July 1996 became the first person awarded the Professional Chinese Achievement in New Zealand, appraised by New Zealand Royal Science Institution and the prize was issued by Vice Premier and Foreign Minister, Mr. Hon Donmckinnor.
The same year, New Zealand National TV Station produced the Feature Film Artist CHEN Weiming.
In addition, Chen established Chinese Newspaper New Times Weekly. It has become the mirror of a successful Chinese enterprise in New Zealand, which is a huge contribution in spreading Chinese culture in the world.
1994 Chen’s artistic achievements were written in the Dictionary of the Achievements of World Chinese Artists published by Great World.
1993 awarded Certificate of Maori carving by the N.V.T. Foundation. Chen is the first Chinese artist to be accepted by the Maori.
1991 authorized by Hillary Funds Committee to create a bronze statue over three meters of Sir Edmund Hillary, a national hero of New Zealand and the first person to reach the top of Mount Everest. The bronze was unveiled by the Governor-General Dame Cath Tizard, the Mayor and Sir Edmund Hillary. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sent a congratulatory message.
For memorizing Chen’s artistic achievement, Auckland Institute of Technology wrote his story in the permanent teaching material of the college.
1990 created the 2.5-meter-high statue of Buddha Sakyamuni for Auckland City, New Zealand.
1989 invited by Auckland University, Chen produced creative scenes and group sculptures for Survivors’ Art Festival.
In charge of design for parts of Auckland Oriental Market and creation of the Four Kings sculptures.
